This Week in Colorado Springs (2/3 - 2/9)

Happy Pre-Valentine's Day Week!!

By Tony Fleming-Brum - February 3, 2017

Well it certainly has been cold the last couple of days, hasn’t it? I hope all our readers are bundling up and staying safe on the roads! This week coming up should be warmer, with highs forecast to be in the mid-high 50s, all the way up to the 60s towards the middle of next week. We all know how our weather can change at the drop of a hat, though, so as always, hope for the best, but plan for the worst!

Starting off our week tonight (2/3) brings us once again to a Colorado Springs icon, Stargazers Theatre! Tonight they’ll be presenting 6035 (sixty thirty-five), a rock classics tribute band that takes pride in playing songs that sound just like the originals -- a tight mix of music from Led Zeppelin to Billy Joel and Journey to the Foo Fighters. Their shows feature songs everyone knows the words to -- from groovy hippies to alternative hipsters. It’s sure to be a great show, and with the sky still very over-cast, it should be a great way to stay warm while enjoying some great music!

Saturday morning through the afternoon (2/4) will provide a great opportunity to celebrate Valentine’s Day a bit early, as the Space Foundation Discovery Center will be hosting their signature Valentine’s Day event: Star Days, I Love Space! Do you love space? At the Space Foundation Discovery Center, everyone does! Join the crowd for some lovely space activities. Activities include: • Science On a Sphere® presentations • ”Do you have chemistry?” a periodic table of elements activity • “Are you hot or not?” a thermal camera demo • “Starlight of my eye” a constellation activity • “Over the Moon” a lunar activity • And many more!

Super Bowl Sunday (2/5) will most definitely be a day to go out and have some fun, and what better place to watch the game than at Thunder and Buttons II! This year Thunder and Buttons II will be joining forces with RXP to put on The Bowl That Is Super Party! They’ll be starting at 3pm ahead of kickoff by giving away tons of prizes including a new 55' flat screen TV, a new recliner, and a trip to Hawaii at the end of the game! As if watching the game with good people and good food wasn’t enough, you’ll have a chance at these and tons more free prizes!!

Monday afternoon (2/6) you’ll have another chance to get a little pre-Valentine’s Day fun in with your significant other at the Movement Arts Community Studio, where they’ll be giving 50% off couples private dance lessons! This year, ditch the dinner and a movie routine, and celebrate the one you love by planning a private dance lesson! Whether you're getting ready for your first dance at your wedding or just want to have a fun date night with your special someone, they have an option that will suit your interests. "Partner dancing is an on-going, fun way to investigate each other’s intricacies, maintain a sense of wonder, and grow together!".

Tuesday evening (2/7) takes us once again to the Pikes Peak Center, a wonderful location for all the best shows in the city. This week they’ll be presenting an American classic, Dirty Dancing! The Classic Story on Stage is an unprecedented live experience, exploding with heart-pounding music, passionate romance, and sensational dancing. Seen by millions across the globe, this worldwide smash hit tells the classic story of Baby and Johnny, two fiercely independent young spirits from different worlds who come together in what will be the most challenging and triumphant summer of their lives. “This crowd-pleasing adaptation hits the jackpot!”.

Wednesday (2/8) this week we’ll be heading over to the Edith Kinney Gaylord Cornerstone Arts Center (what a mouthful!) for their presentation of JAZZMASTERS: The Brubeck Brothers Quartet in Concert with the Chamber Orchestra! Jazz legend Dave Brubeck inspired generations of jazz pianists, left an astonishing recorded legacy, and gave the world compositions for jazz ensembles and orchestra that will be heard long into the future. He also raised remarkably talented sons who have formed the Brubeck Brothers Quartet and continue moving jazz forward through cutting-edge performances and new works. The Chamber Orchestra joins the Brubeck Brothers Quartet for one of the most uplifting and adventurous performances of our season. It’s jazz, it’s classical, it’s collaboration, it’s musical exploration, and it’s a singular event that cannot be missed!

Wrapping up our week with Thursday (2/9), we’ll stop by the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center for their presentation of Enchanted April! This delightful romantic comedy, based on the beloved novel, comes to the FAC for the first time, following 500 critically-acclaimed productions worldwide. Feeling lost in the shadows of marriage and post-WWI society, two unhappy London housewives rent a villa in Italy for a ladies-only holiday away – reluctantly recruiting a pair of difficult, upper-class women to share the cost and the experience. Together, among the wisteria blossoms and the Mediterranean sunshine, the four women clash — and then begin to bond and bloom — until men once again upset the balance. It’ll be a great show to finish off the week before we get started on our Valentine’s Day weekend!
