This Week in Colorado Springs (1/27 - 2/2)

Happy Groundhog Day!!

By Tony Fleming-Brum - January 26, 2017

True to form, the weather here in Colorado Springs this week has been a seesaw to say the least! This weekend we should start seeing the weather warming up, and that warming trend should continue all the way through next week. We all know Colorado weather, though, so hope for the best, but definitely still plan for the chance of cold weather at a moment’s notice!

Starting off our weekend with Friday evening (1/27), we’ll stop by the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center for an evening of excellent stand-up comedy by Paula Poundstone! Heralded as one of our country’s foremost comics, Paula Poundstone’s quick-thinking, unscripted approach to comedy makes for a perfect fit as a regular panelist on NPR’s #1 show, the screwball weekly news quiz show "WAIT WAIT…DON’T TELL ME!" where she holds the record for game losses. “The others cheat,” Poundstone says, “you wouldn’t think NPR would put up with that.” It’ll be a great show, and on the coldest evening of the week to boot!

Saturday (1/28) as the temperature starts warming up again we’ll swing by Southside Johnny’s for a great night of music with Cold Brew’d 40! Ever popular here in Colorado Springs, Southside Johnny’s is an expansive, rustic watering hole with live music, sports on TV, & American pub grub & drinks. This week they’ll be hosting Cold Brew’d 40 live all night, so come on down and enjoy a great local band playing all your favorite classic rock covers, and all the best food that Southside Johnny’s has to offer!

Sunday afternoon (1/29) as the temperature continues to warm we’ll take the opportunity to stop by the Garden of the Gods Nature Center, where they’ll be putting on their Intro to Winter Hiking presentation. Winter doesn’t have to mean the end of the hiking season! With proper clothing, gear and knowledge you can enjoy your favorite trails even in the colder months. Whether you are planning a day hike in Garden of the Gods, or a longer excursion into the wilderness it is important to be prepared. Join them for a fun presentation where you will learn tips for staying warm and safe on your next winter hiking adventure. This presentation is free but donations are gratefully accepted.

With Monday (1/30) slated to be the warmest day of the week, it should provide a perfect opportunity to make your way out to the Art Gallery of the Rockies, where they’ll have the artwork of James Christensen – Master of the Imagination on display! From fantasy to inspirational, to perspective and non-perspective, his genius and humor show through his art. What better way to enjoy the break in cold weather than a relaxing afternoon appreciating some great artwork!

Tuesday evening (1/31) will provide a great chance to take in a unique telling of the Charles Dickens classic, Oliver Twist at the Simpich Showcase Theatre! David Simpich portrays the great author as he presents the story of a young orphan who inadvertently gets entangled in the London criminal underworld, setting off a sequence of events that is as unexpected as it is dramatic. It is the goal of puppeteer David Simpich to bring this mastery to light and life through the medium of puppet theatre… using marionette actors and Dickens’ central themes to steer him. The adventures of literature’s most renowned orphan now play on the Simpich Showcase stage with all the passion, pathos and color that distinguish this beloved tale. You definitely won’t want to miss this one!

With half the week over with, and the weekend fast approaching, why not take the opportunity to unwind a bit this Wednesday evening (2/1)? And what better place to do it than the Gold Camp Brewing Company, where they’ll be having their weekly live trivia night, Triviality! Bring your team and get ready for some fun! Lil Howard's BBQ will be serving delicious pulled pork, hot links, and more! Gold Camp also has an amazing array of locally brewed beers on tap. The top 3 finishers in the trivia game get prizes, with 1st place being a gift certificate AND a team flag on the coveted Trivia Trophy!

Groundhog Day this year (Thursday 2/2) is forecast to be a bright and sunny day, so we should be expecting a late spring this year! Every Thursday the Ivywild School has a free movie night presented by the Independent Film Society of Colorado, and this Thursday they’ll be presenting a Bill Murray classic, Groundhog Day the movie! With a full bar, popcorn, and snack food menu, this is definitely a fun event here in town that you’ll want to take part in!
