This Week in Colorado Springs (1/23 - 1/28)

Sunshine in Winter!

By Tony Fleming-Brum - January 23, 2018

Good morning Colorado Springs, and welcome once again to this week’s edition of the Front Range Shuttle weekly events blog! What a difference in the weather from Sunday this week to Monday! Hopefully everyone stayed warm and dry, or if you were traveling, that you made it to your destination safe and sound! This week we’re looking at more mild winter weather, with highs ranging from the 60s to start off the week, and dropping down to the 40s for the weekend. Still, we’ll be seeing plenty of sunshine, so let’s see what events we’ll have going on!
Kicking off our week with Tuesday (1/23), we’ll be heading over to Pub Dog Colorado for their Barks, Booze, & Bags Fundraiser! The fundraiser is to benefit the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region. Support homeless animals with every sip as $1 from each draft beer or wine sold is donated to HSPPR. Enter the “Doggie Bag Giveaway” for your chance to win prizes and cool dog swag! Doggie bags are filled with mystery prizes worth hundreds of dollars. Winners announced at 8pm.
This Wednesday (1/24) we’ve got less of an event, more of an opportunity to help out our community. The Pikes Peak Community College will be hosting a Blood Drive this week at their Centennial campus here on the South end of Colorado Springs. You don’t need a special reason to donate blood, the need is constant, and your contribution is important for a healthy and reliable blood supply. You’ll feel good knowing you’ve helped save a life, so come on down and sign up!
Rolling right along into Thursday (1/25), we’ll be heading up to WhirlyBall for their Nurse’s Night Out event! WhirlyBall is holding its first “Nurses Night Out” to celebrate critical members of our local medical community, as well as honoring National IV Nurse Day. At the event, WhirlyBall will be offering half-off games of WhirlyBall and bowling, as well as half-off appetizers and bottles of house wine. With a slogan of “nurses need shots too” there will also be special $4 shots called Mind Eraser, Call Light, Night Shift and Code Brown!
And kicking off our weekend with Friday (1/26), we’ll be swinging by the Stargazers Theatre, where they’ll be hosting The BUS Band – Tribute to the Music of Crosby, Stills, & Nash! Join The BUS Band (KJ Braithwaite, Joe Uveges, and Jim Sokol) who will play a full set of a special tribute to Crosby, Stills & Nash, along with a full set of originals in a similar style. The BUS delivers beautiful three-part harmonies and guitar work. They recently played to a sold-out crowd at the Pikes Peak Center with the Craig Walter Band. This will be an amazing night of music that you don’t want to miss!
As for this Saturday (1/27), we’ll be heading up to Manitou Springs for their Great Fruitcake Toss event! Join local Manitoids to enjoy this old fashioned event of tossing those left over fruitcakes! Fruitcakes will be available to rent for all tossers. Local bakers will compete for the title of Fruitcake King or Queen and the community will determine who makes the best organic, non-GMO, or natural wonderful fruitcake. Cost: A donation of one non-perishable food item will benefit a local food pantry. Co-sponsored by the Manitou Springs Heritage Center and the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce. The Heritage Center will be open during the event for hot cocoa and snacks.
And wrapping up our week with Sunday (1/28), we’ll be making our way over to the Pikes Peak Center, where they’ll be hosting the Colorado Springs Philharmonic performing Bernstein No. 1! Leonard Bernstein's Symphony No. 1 Jeremiah was composed in 1942. Jeremiah is a programmatic work, following the Biblical story of the prophet Jeremiah. It uses texts from the Book of Lamentations in the Hebrew Bible, sung by a mezzo-soprano. The work won the New York Music Critics' Circle Award for the best American work of 1944. You won’t want to miss this one!
