This Week in Colorado Springs (6/5 - 6/11)

Happy Monday from Front Range Shuttle!

By Tony Fleming-Brum - June 4, 2017

Good morning Colorado Springs, and welcome to yet another installment of the Front Range Shuttle local events Blog! It’s starting to feel like summer out there, everyone! We’re still looking to see some scattered thunderstorms in the afternoons this week, but with temperatures in the 70s to 80s, and clear skies forecast for the weekend, it should be great weather to get out and explore!

With warm weather in the forecast, and rain clouds only heading out way later in the afternoon, why not take a trip over to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo on Monday (6/5) while everyone is at work! Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s 146 picturesque acres are home to over 750 animals of every variety. Mirroring their natural habitats in the wild, the animals’ Zoo homes will transport you to wild places around the globe. With its distinctive mountainside setting at an elevation of 6,714— and over 170 species of wild animals, engaging exhibits and irresistible attractions, at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo the wonders of the wild are just a short trip away!

If you haven’t had the chance to see the new show yet, you’ll definitely want to head over to The Simpich Showcase Marionette Theatre for their showings of The Firebird this Tuesday (6/6)! Nothing is as it appears to be for young Prince Ivan as he ventures forth on a quest to capture the illusive and deadly Firebird. He is aided in his harrowing journey by a flying wolf, a hospitable owl and innkeeper mouse; riddles and tests are inexplicably solved; and an adventure unfolds that carries the wayward hero to the farthest reaches of fairy tale Russia.

On Wednesday (6/7) of this week, we’ll be heading on over to Front Range BBQ once again! If the good food and good company isn’t enough to entice you to swing by, this week they’ll be hosting Selasee and the Fafa Family! Born in Accra, Ghana, Selasee grew up exposed to the colorful and energetic sounds of Highlife Music. With this exposure Selasee created his own style—a unique blend of Reggae, West African Highlife and American Pop music. Threading together English and West African lyrics for a bright and captivating sound. Get there early for a table!

Thursday (6/8) of this week we’ll be heading over to Stargazers Theatre for a very special show: The Jimi Hendrix Revolution with Randy Hansen!  For nearly three decades, world-renowned guitarist Randy Hansen has acquired quite a reputation as being one of the best Hendrix impersonators on the Third Stone from the Sun. Releasing countless discs through the years featuring both stellar Hendrix jams and his own authentic Hendrix-inspired riffage, the man is a true guitar legend in every sense of the word. In a sea of Hendrix-inspired guitarists, Randy Hansen stands tall and is one of the few players officially recognized by the Hendrix family. “He’s just brilliant. He’s completely brilliant.” -Rolling Stone

Friday (6/9) will be a great chance to get out of the house for a free show, and with clear skies in the forecast, the carnival and rides at City Summer Fest will be a ton of fun! Crabtree amusements will fill the parking lot in front of Colorado Springs Event Center with everything from kiddie rides to the newest extreme thrill rides. After the rides, you’ll have a chance to see the hit band AJR with their hit single “Weak” which has been certified Gold in the U.S., and Platinum in Australia!

Saturday (6/10) we’ll be stopping by the Pikes Peak Center for their presentation of a real legend, David Blaine! Described by Howard Stern as the greatest magician that ever lived, David Blaine single-handedly redefined magic after producing and directing his original television special Street Magic when he was just twenty-three, which Penn Jillette of Penn & Teller called “the best TV magic special ever done.” The New York Times noted that Blaine has “taken a craft that’s been around for hundreds of years and done something unique and fresh with it,” whilst The New Yorker claimed “he saved magic.”

Wrapping up our week with Sunday (6/11), we’ll head right back to the Colorado Springs Event Center for another full-day of fun at the City Summer Fest! This Sunday 104.9 TIGRE Spanish Radio will be presenting their 7th Annual Women’s Fair, with 12 Mexican bands performing live on stage all day including international and regional recording artists! See 104.9 Tigre on Facebook for a full line-up!
