Good morning Colorado Springs, and welcome to this week’s installment of the Front Range Shuttle local events blog! We may have had some rainy, chilly days last week, but this week it’s looking like Spring is finally upon us! With clear skies all the way through next Saturday and highs in the 70s, it’ll be a great week to get out and explore our beautiful city!
We’ll start off our week of gorgeous weather with Monday (5/22) at the North Slope Recreation Area
! Fisherman and outdoor enthusiasts take note! Crystal Reservoir, North Catamount and South Catamount Lakes are now open for fishing, and the North Slope Recreation Area is now open for the season. Grab your gear for a great day in the mountains!
Tuesday (5/23) we’ll be heading up to the Cheyenne Mountain State Park
for an early morning Bird Hike with birding experts Charlie Campbell and Barry Cooper! It will be an easy hike, to look for and identify both resident and migratory bird species; it’s migration time! It is recommended that you bring water, binoculars, and a notepad. They will also have some binoculars you may borrow if you wish. No experience necessary, recommended for ages 7 and up. Closed-toe shoes are required, and hiking shoes are recommended. Let’s get out and enjoy the sun!
Wednesday (5/24) is the US Air Force Academy graduation, so if you’re in town visiting a cadet, what better way to celebrate their accomplishments than an evening of good food and good tunes? This week Front Range BBQ
will be hosting Malcolm Lucard and the Vagamundo Orchestra
for a new CD release party! I haven’t had the pleasure of seeing this group live yet, but according to the Colorado Springs Gazette
, “Lucard tickles the brain not only with his stories, but with the melodies that carry them.”. It should be a great night!
This Thursday (5/25) we’ll be spending the evening indoors, but the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center
will definitely make it worth-while with their presentation of Man of La Mancha
! A celebrated Broadway hit and winner of five Tony Awards®, Man of La Mancha is a remarkable show and one of the great theatre successes of the 20th century. It will leave you breathless with a score including the touching ode to romance, Dulcinea, the heroic, I, Don Quixote and the unforgettable, The Impossible Dream. Inspired by one of the greatest novels of all time, Man of La Mancha features Miguel de Cervantes and his faithful servant, who channel the power of storytelling to recount the legend of wannabe knight Don Quixote and his trusty sidekick Sancho as they embark on a journey full of laughter, love and unruly windmills. Man of La Mancha is a theatrical masterpiece sure to captivate all lovers of musical theater!
We’ll be starting off our Memorial Day Weekend on Friday (5/26) at the Pikes Peak International Raceway
, where they’ll be hosting the 2017 Into Thin Air Drift Party
! The Into Thin Air Drift Party on Memorial Day Weekend at Pikes Peak International Raceway is going to be a huge party for car enthusiasts featuring Formula Drift Pro-Am Southwest Drift, Drift Colorado, PPIR Open Drift and Saturday Night Drags! Overnight camping is available for all on the infield area of PPIR on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night for FREE! RV power hook-ups are $25 for the weekend (limited availability). Come on down and let’s kick off our Memorial Day Weekend the right way!
Saturday evening (5/27) the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo
has a very special event for kids only: WildNights at the Zoo
! Have your kids ever seen or heard the Zoo at night? Don’t guess, have them come learn what it’s like to spend the night among the creatures at the Zoo. Let your kids go see what the animals do while the rest of us sleep (or enjoy a rare night without worrying about the kids)! In a fun-filled night to remember, they can explore Cheyenne Mountain Zoo by moonlight. This program is for kids only, dinner and breakfast are served by the Zoo. NOTE: Kids must be 5 years or older to participate.
Wrapping up this week’s event blog with Sunday (5/28), we’ll be heading up to Black Forest for The Ninth Annual Meadowgrass Music Festival
! Start the festival season off right with one of Colorado’s most eclectic music festivals, held annually over Memorial Day weekend at the beautiful La Foret Conference & Retreat Center in Black Forest. Located between Colorado Springs and Denver, MeadowGrass is the perfect getaway for families and music lovers. The festival features performances from more than 20 national, regional and local artists, music workshops, yoga, kids’ activities, and camping. Join us to discover why MeadowGrass has been named “Best Music Festival” by readers of the Colorado Springs Independent year after year!
