This Week in Colorado Springs (5/15-5/21)

Happy Armed Forces Week!

By Tony Fleming-Brum - May 14, 2017

Hello once again, Colorado Springs, from your friendly, neighborhood Blogger! Hopefully you were able to stay dry during our week of rainy afternoons, and took full advantage of the gorgeous weekend of sun that followed! This week is looking like a bit of rain towards the weekend, but temperatures still pleasantly warm for the start of our week.
We’ll kick off our weekly events with Monday (5/15) at The Broadmoor Hotel, where they’ll be hosting the 2017 Armed Forces Week Awards Luncheon! The luncheon will be to honor our enlisted men and women, and provides a unique opportunity to express our community’s gratitude to our military for their dedication and service to the nation. The event features keynote speaker Lieutenant General Michelle Johnson, Superintendent of the United States Air Force Academy. With Memorial Day fast approaching, what better way to honor our men and women in uniform!
Tuesday (5/16) we’ll be heading over to the Cottonwood Center for the Arts, where they’ll have an art showcase of pattern and decoration: Motif.  Patterns have been and continue to be integral to art all over the world, including the intricate geometric patterns of the Islamic world, the colorful floral embroideries of Turkey, Japanese woodblocks, and the diverse mosaics from Mexico, Rome, and the Byzantine empire. This will be a great opportunity to take in some fine art while you’re here in town, and the best part: it’s free!
With half the week over with, and the weekend fast approaching, why not take the opportunity to unwind a bit this Wednesday evening (5/17)? And what better place to do it than the Gold Camp Brewing Company, where they’ll be having their weekly live trivia night, Triviality! Bring your team and get ready for some fun! Lil Howard's BBQ will be serving delicious pulled pork, hot links, and more! Gold Camp also has an amazing array of locally brewed beers on tap. The top 3 finishers in the trivia game get prizes, with 1st place being a gift certificate AND a team flag on the coveted Trivia Trophy!
With rain forecast for Thursday afternoon (5/18), we’ll be swinging by the Funky Little Theater Company for their production of Extremities, the Play by William Mastrosimone! This production features the talents of local actors Haley Hunsaker, Sophie Thunberg, Desiree Myers, and Dylan McClintock and is being directed by Funky Company Member, Grant Langdon. Marjorie is home alone when Raul enters through her unlocked door and attempts to attack her. The tables turn when Marjorie is able to subdue Raul and keep him tied up in her fireplace. When Terry and Patricia, Marjorie's roommates, come home to find the unimaginable... they are shocked and begin discussing how to handle the situation: call the police, or take matters into their own hands? This play contains adult situations and language that is not intended or suited for children.
Friday evening (5/19) we’re looking at rain once again, but that’s ok, because Stargazers Theatre will be hosting “An Evening with Audrey Bussanich and Wendy Woo” that’s sure to entertain! Audrey Bussanich writes and performs jazz, pop and Americana styles. She began training as a classical pianist at the age of three and has a strong foundation in classical performance and composition that informs her original songs. Her music shows influences ranging from the impressionist composers of the 18th century to the rock/Americana bands of the 60's. Audrey displays a musical depth and range that is unusual for an artist of her age. As Colorado’s music scene has exploded over the past few years, one of its mainstays has been Wendy Woo. Her energetic personality, musical skills, and spirited songwriting have made her a media and fan favorite. WWB is a poly-ethnic, power pop, song-rock, 6-piece band with sweet vocal harmonies and shuddering grooves.
Saturday afternoon (5/20) the rain is looking to continue through the evening with scattered showers, so we’ll be heading over to King Pin Lanes for AAZK's Bowling for Rhinos Fundraiser! Strike Out Extinction! Is that rumble that you hear the charge of a huge rhinoceros…. or just bowling balls rolling towards pins? Join Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s Zoo Keepers and AAZK for a fun night of bowling, raffles and door prizes – and it’s all to help wild rhinos! Bowling for Rhinos (BFR) is an annual fundraising event held by AAZK (American Association of Zoo Keepers ) chapters across the country. Register yourself or a team, gather sponsors (optional) and come bowl with us!
To bring our week to a close, we’ll head to the Pikes Peak Center on Sunday (5/21), where the Colorado Springs Philharmonic will be presenting Carmina Burana! The dramatic arias and complex rhythms of Carl Orff’s medieval cantata Carmina Burana are renowned for being tough to pull off — and even tougher to fully realize within the confines of a concert hall. The Colorado Springs Philharmonic brings a whole season’s worth of musical momentum to the challenge, combining the might of the Colorado Springs Chorale and the Children’s Chorale for a tour de force performance of this ancient meditation on fickle fortune, fleeting life, and the joy of the return of Spring!

And as always, don't forget about Front Range Shuttle! From cozy SUV's to 25 passenger buses, we have all your airport transportation needs covered!
