This Week in Colorado Springs (02/06 - 02/11)

Happy Black History Month!

By Tony Fleming-Brum - February 6, 2018

Good morning Colorado Springs, and welcome once again to this week’s edition of the Front Range Shuttle weekly events blog! What a surprise this morning to wake up to a bit of snow on the ground! As dry as this winter has been, we can use all the moisture we can get! The rest of the week is looking relatively mild, with highs in the 50s through Friday, and a slight chance of snow and colder temperatures on Saturday and Sunday. Fingers crossed we’ll be seeing that fresh snow on Saturday!
Kicking off our week with Tuesday (2/6), we’ll be heading up to the Simpich Showcase Theatre for their presentation of The Hans Christian Andersen Storybook! Interweaving seven of Andersen’s classic fairy tales, this solo theatre piece explores and celebrates the themes of Denmark’s premier storyteller.  The Ugly Duckling takes center stage to live out and discuss his troubling storyline with his author (portrayed by puppeteer David Simpich).  Other Andersen characters including the Little Match Girl, Thumbelina and the Steadfast Tin Soldier join in to share their tales as well, and to cheer the duckling on towards his story’s profound conclusion!
As for this Wednesday (2/7), we’ll be making our way over to the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center for their presentation of Chiho Aoshima: Takaamanohara! Drawing equally from traditional Japanese Shinto mythology and contemporary Anime films, this immersive, highly detailed video installation by Chiho Aoshima invites the viewer into another world. The title Takaamanohara, the plain of high heaven, refers to a place where Shinto deities reside. With a vivid imagination and a saturated color palette, this video retells a creation story about the time when the gods of heaven separated from the gods of the land. You won’t want to miss this one!
And this Thursday (2/8) we’ll be making our way down to the Stargazers Theatre for the Pikes Peak Blues Community presenting Woodshed Red! Woodshed Red hails from the Colorado Springs area and performs all over Colorado and the neighboring states. The group came together in 2013 and began covering a huge variety of genres, as well as writing their own original tunes. Inspired by bluegrass, blues, funk and rock spanning eras of music both old and new, the band members have incorporated their individual styles to create their own unique sound. The instrumentation of Woodshed Red generates an upbeat positive grassy sound, intertwined with funky, untamed improvisation!
And kicking off our weekend with Friday (2/9), we’ll be stopping by the Antlers Hotel for GalaxyFest 2018! GalaxyFest is a 3-day celebration at The Antlers Wyndam Hotel of the eclectic arts and pop culture which brings the community together. Every corner and closet of the Antler's hotel is crammed with nothing but pop culture! From Anime to Zombies, from Star Trek to Star Wars. We start on Friday morning and it don't stop until Sunday evening. We are a family event throughout the weekend. There is something for EVERYONE. Friday and Saturday nights are filled with 21 and over events. Sunday is kid's day, 12 and under free with a paid adult. Keep an eye out for our exclusive VIP events. Kick off the year and the con season with the premier multi-genre pop culture event across the Front Range!
As for this Saturday (2/10), we’ll be heading up to Manitou Springs for the Carnivale Parade! Manitou’s annual Carnivale Parade will march up Manitou Avenue starting at 1 p.m., Saturday, February 10th. People and pets of all ages are invited to join the Parade. Please remember that the Parade is family-friendly. It is asked that marchers arrive at Wichita Parking Lot (next to Stagecoach Inn) by 12:00 p.m. so organizers can begin lining up the Parade.
And wrapping up our weekend with Sunday (2/11), we’ll be stopping by Zodiac for their February Hula Jam! February brings us closer to the ones we love - come share the love with your flow friends at February's Hula Jam! Featuring live DJs, the stupendous Callie Kathryn Reda as Hula Hostess, hooping prizes, and happy hour specials! Spread the love through dance and flow fun!
