This Week in Colorado Springs (1/5 - 1/12)

Starting off Cool and Warming Up!

By Tony Fleming-Brum - January 5, 2017

Well the snow has come and gone once again, and it looks like we’re in for clear skies and warming temperatures through next week. It should be a great weekend to take in some of the beautiful hiking spots here in Colorado Springs, with snow still on the ground but temperatures much more suitable for being outdoors!

Starting off the weekend with Friday evening (1/6), we’ll pop in to the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center for their contribution to the First Friday Downtown. Their vibrant First Friday Art Parties include: artist talks and demonstrations, music, exclusive giveaways to FAC events, a cash bar and the stunning ambiance offered by this chic, historic venue. Both the Deco Lounge and Museum Shop participate in First Friday, featuring art for sale by local and regional artists. You’ll definitely want to stop by for this First Friday of the year!

Saturday (1/7) we’ll be swinging by the Gold Camp Brewing Company for the First Saturday event Locals Till Last Call. Hosted by comedian Melody Klema, Locals Till Last Call showcases a local comedian and band every First Saturday of the month, then ends with an Open Mic and Improv. Performing at the open mic is a great way to earn a paid showcase spot. Gold Camp brews all local beers and Lil Howard's BBQ will be serving all night; it’s sure to be a great First Saturday of the year!

Sunday afternoon (1/8) will provide a very unique opportunity at The Money Museum, as they’ll be presenting their exhibit The Olympic Games: History and Numismatics to mark the XXXI Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro this past summer. The exhibit showcases the wide range of numismatic objects and memorabilia honoring the Olympic Games from their ancient beginnings to the modern revival. Notable artifacts include rare Syracusan dekadrachms, a 1936 Berlin Summer Olympics bronze medallion, a complete set of award medals from the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics and 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, plus participation medals, torches and even a few mascots. Definitely an exhibit worth checking out!

Monday (1/9) the Academy Art & Frame Company will be showing Joe Beavers’ 3D Color Explosion exhibit! Joe Beavers’ creativity and art come to life in this exhibit of unique works of various colors, materials, and “black light” lighting to provide an experience not often seen at AAFC. Much of Joe's artwork comes from the memories he has built with his family of 3 children, 7 grandchildren, and his loving dogs.

Tuesday evening (1/10) will be a very special night at the Pikes Peak Center, as they’ll be hosting the truly original Broadway experience, ONCE. Winner of eight Tony Awards, and featuring an impressive ensemble of actor/musicians who play their own instruments onstage, ONCE tells the enchanting tale of a Dublin street musician who's about to give up on his dream until a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs. It's an unforgettable story about going for your dreams and the power of music connecting us all.

Wednesday (1/11) here in Colorado Springs should be the warmest night of the week, with clear skies and a high of 54 projected, so why not check out the local favorite for good eats and good music, Jack Quinn’s? Jack Quinn's is a "Public House" in the true sense of the term, and is a hub of social activity for downtown Colorado Springs throughout the year featuring live music and other entertainment, Irish cultural events, and local and national sports. This week they will be hosting The Coteries, a female-fronted trio, brings you music steeped in their travels on the back roads of America in their old VW Bus, Trusty Rusty.

Thursday evening (1/12) we’ll wind down our week and start preparing for the weekend with a trip to Jives Coffee Lounge, where they’ll be hosting their bi-weekly Open Mic Night! Got a gift? Come on down and share it with the community here in town! Just sign up with the barista and strut your stuff for your 15 minutes of Fame! They have guitars, mics, a sick stage and great folks just dying to hear you!

Also be sure to visit our Guided Colorado Tours section for up to date information on our custom tour services. Come join us for a road trip into Colorado history and nature!

And as always, don't forget about Front Range Shuttle! From cozy SUV's to 25 passenger buses, we have all your airport transportation needs covered!

This Week in Colorado Springs (12/29 - 1/5)

New Year's Weekend in Colorado Springs!

By Tony Fleming-Brum - December 29, 2016

Snowy weather is on the way to Colorado Springs next week, but not before we have a nice sunny Friday, and mostly sunny New Year’s weekend! If you’re visiting the area for the holiday weekend you should be alright with just a medium jacket, but if you’re staying through the week you’ll definitely want to bundle up!

Starting off our week with Friday (12/30), we head over to Peak 31 for their Happy New Year Tribute show, paying homage to some of greatest musicians in history: Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, and Johnny Cash! Dress up in your best retro outfit, do up your hair and make-up, and head on down to relive yesteryear and take in some great music before your exciting New Year’s Eve!

New Year’s Eve we’ll start off the day early for the families with children here in the area at the Pikes Peak Children’s Museum, where they’ll be having their annual Happy Noon Year’s event! Nothing good happens after midnight. At least, that’s what our parents used to say. Our toddlers can’t even make it to midnight, but they love to celebrate New Year’s Eve just as much as we do. That’s why the Pikes Peak Children’s Museum rings in the new year at NOON! Join them for a kid-style New Year’s celebration. Trust them, they’re serious about fun. And bedtime.
Later in the evening the Pikes Peak Center will be ringing in 2017 with style and putting on a song-filled, sparkling celebration of the year to come. Some of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic’s most popular vocalists return to light up the night with Broadway hits and classic American songs with favorites from Wicked, Cats, and Victor Victoria.
If the Philharmonic isn’t up your alley, though, there is plenty more going on downtown! Take a stroll downtown Saturday evening and you’re sure to come across plenty of welcoming establishments who would just love to turn the last calendar page with you!

Sunday (1/1) should definitely be a day of rest and relaxation, and what better way to do it than with brunch specials and NFL? The Public House – Pub & Grill will be opening 10:00 a.m. New Year’s Day with good food and big screens playing all your favorite teams!

Monday (1/2) we’ll actually get the year started (after recovering from all the New Year’s fun!) at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, because it will be the last night to celebrate 25 years of holiday cheer during Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s Electric Safari! Over one million glittering lights and 40+ animated light sculptures illuminate the Zoo and create dazzling memories for your family. Warming fires throughout the Zoo offer a reprieve from the chill, as do select indoor animal exhibits that remain open during the event. Top off this astounding display by gazing out at the city’s lights and watch all of Colorado Springs sparkle!

Tuesday (1/3) should be the first snow of the new year, so it’ll probably be best to stay somewhere warm. With that in mind, why not try out a little Painting with a Twist? Ready to paint the town at your pARTy? Arrive 15-20 minutes early to get uncorked, smocked & in your seat! Colorado law prohibits BYOB, so beer, wine & soft drinks are available at their Inspiration Bar. This should definitely be a memorable night of art, fun, and some silliness too!

Wednesday (1/3) will be a nice chance for adults visiting the Springs to unwind at Southside Johnny’s where they will be hosting their weekly This is a Clue trivia night! Play in teams of up to six, or by yourself if you want a real challenge. Winning teams get bar cash, street prizes, and of course, street cred among fellow trivia maniacs!

Thursday (1/4) takes us once again to a Colorado Springs favorite: Stargazers Theatre! This week they’ll be hosting the David Bromberg Quintet! Led by David Bromberg, an American multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter, the Quintet has seen many members over the years, but David has always been there. An eclectic artist, Bromberg plays bluegrass, blues, folk, jazz, country and western, and rock and roll equally well. He is known for his quirky, humorous lyrics, and the ability to play rhythm and lead guitar at the same time. He’s played with everyone, he’s toured everywhere, he can lead a raucous big band or hold an audience silent with an acoustic blues solo. Definitely a show worth seeing if you’re in town this week!

This Week in Colorado Springs (12/23 - 12/29)

Merry Christmas!

By Tony Fleming-Brum - December 22, 2016

There is so much going on this week in Colorado Springs, I hope you're ready for a great Christmas weekend! Weather wise, we're looking at mild temperatures this week, with a very slight chance of a white Christmas! Aside from Christmas Day, though, we should have clear skies and highs in the 50s this week, perfect holiday weather.

Starting off the week with Friday (12/23), we'll visit the Whistle Pig Brewing Company, where they'll be hosting their annual Ugly Sweater Party! So rummage through the thrift shop, hit up Amazon, or call your grand-dad and find that perfect, gaudy, and cozy ugly sweater. They will be taking $1 off every pint for those in the festive spirit, and the Whistle Pig crew will vote and give a free pint to the one rocking the ugliest of the sweaters!

Saturday (12/24) is going to be a very special day in Divide, Colorado, as the Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center will be inviting guests to join them for their Winter Wonderland with the Wolves event! They believe that as stewards of this earth we should preserve and protect our wildlife; for not only their existence but for ours as well, and in the spirit of preservation, are inviting guests to join them for a holiday celebration enjoying breakfast burritos with the wolves!

Christmas day (12/25) falls on a Sunday this year, and as the coldest day of the week, should definitely be spent inside cozied up by the fireplace (or space heater!). If you're looking to get out of the house, or are on the road this Christmas, maybe you'd enjoy a stop by the Salvation Army Community Christmas Dinner. Everyone is welcome to attend the community dinner (hours will be 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.). Volunteers and donations, as well as new toys and non-perishable foods are always needed!

Monday (12/26) I hope that everyone will be feeling fully satisfied and ready to start off the week with some gusto, and what better way to burn off those holiday calories than a nice afternoon of ice skating? The Broadmoor World Arena will be opening their big ice rink to the public for the holidays, so you don't have to worry about the wind outside blowing you around while you skate! Complimentary hot beverages will also be served during skate hours, so you'll be sure to stay warm on the ice!

Tuesday (12/27) we'll begin winding down the Christmas vibe, and revving up for New Years. With that in mind, what better way to get yourself in the partying mood than a trip to the Pikes Peak Center to see The Beach Boys? To mark their 50th Anniversary, the founding members of The Beach Boys are reuniting for a major international tour and a brand new studio album that represents a whole new harmonic convergence from a group that has brought so much joy and harmony to this whole world; it'll definitely be a show not to be missed!

Wednesday (12/28) brings us to CITYRock Climbing Gym, where we'll have a chance to get the kids (and our own inner-children) out of the house for some fun at their Winter Caving Camps. The caving camps are a fun, educational, and athletic way for your child to enjoy the Christmas break. Participants will learn rappelling, ascending, and caving, all in the safety of a highly-realistic artificial cave system under CityROCK climbing gym. Camp will also include cave search & rescue practice using real rescue gear, hands-on experience with working carbide lamps, useful knots, and numerous STEM subjects. It sure sounds like a blast to me!

Thursday (12/29) the air should already be tense with the nervous energy of New Years weekend, and the good people at The Gold Room know it! Their PRE PRE NYE Party will be starting off the weekend with a bang, as the Colorado band Monsters On Maple Street will be on! It's always a great time on the show, especially for those who might not be going out to celebrate on New Years Eve, so do so with them!

It's Almost Christmas!!

By Tony Fleming-Brum - December 15, 2016

Hello loyal readers and first-timers! It looks like the signature Colorado roller coaster of cold and warm weather is going to have some crazy turns this week, with a high of 60° today (12/16), and dropping to a high of just 11° tomorrow!

With that warm weather in mind, we’ll start our week off Friday evening (12/16) with a little outdoor family fun at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. There’s only one place in Colorado Springs that you can see over 85 one-of-a-kind light sculptures and 50 acres of lights and wild animals – Cheyenne Mountain Zoo's Electric Safari! Better yet, Santa Claus will be taking holiday wishes each night through December 23!

Saturday (12/17) will most definitely be the coldest day of the week, so why not take the opportunity to check out Christmas in Magic Town? Michael Garman’s Magic Town is a 3,000 square-foot miniature city which he describes as “a gigantic playground for the mind, part carnival, part dollhouse, [and] part sculpture”. Whether travelling with your kids, or just letting out a bit of your own inner child, Magic Town is sure to be a treat!

Sunday (12/18) should see a slight warming up here in Colorado Springs, though the snow and ice on the ground from Saturday will certainly keep things nice and brisk. In keeping with the chilly weather and holiday feel that’s quickly ramping up here in Colorado Springs, why not stop by the Pikes Peak Center for their presentation of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic – Christmas Symphony? Take time to enjoy the spirit of the season with holiday classics and Christmas favorites at this beloved concert including the local premiere of choruses from Mendelssohn’s Christus and highlights from Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and Polar Express.

Monday afternoon (12/19) brings us to Manitou Springs, where the CommonWheel Artists Co-Op will be running their annual Holiday Market event! Their art and fine craft items are made by local Colorado artists with both price and quality in mind. You’re sure to find unique gift ideas for even the hardest people to shop for on your list!

Tuesday (12/20) will provide a very unique opportunity in Woodland Park if you’re a fan of both the holiday season and dinosaurs! Santa and the Dinos Santa Claus will be coming to the DRC (Dinosaur Research Center) from 11am-2pm. They will have a craft table available for the children to make an ornament for the Center’s Christmas tree, as well as one for themselves, so come and see Santa and help them decorate their Christmas tree!

Wednesday (12/21) we’ve got a great chance to see a new band in town at Front Range BBQ, Cold Heart Revival! With the band playing their own brand of Alternative Folk Americana, and the best Southern BBQ & Home-Style and Cajun Cooked Meals, this is sure to be an entertaining evening! Front Range BBQ has been serving up Award-Winning BBQ since 2000, and are also a Craft Beer Tap House with 10 Rotating Specialty Taps & 20 Specialty Bottled Beers!

Thursday evening (12/22) will be a very unique opportunity here in Colorado Springs, as Colorado Vertical Adventures will be running up their Christmas Lights helicopter tours! Experience a Reindeer’s-eye view of the Colorado Springs Christmas lights in a modern, Rolls Royce Jet powered helicopter, with music on board to set the mood! A great early Christmas present for the family to start off the holiday weekend!

This Week in Colorado Springs (12/9 - 12/15)

Winter is Coming!

By Tony Fleming-Brum - December 8, 2016

My goodness we had some chilly weather this past week, didn’t we? It seems as though winter is coming in waves this year, though, as this whole weekend and next week are slated to be relatively sunny and warm (comparatively).

Starting off our week with Friday evening (12/9), we have a truly extravagant Christmas production at the Glen Eyrie Castle! No other event compares to Glen Eyrie’s Madrigal! Set in the grandeur of The Great Hall of The Castle, our 16th century-style banquet is sure to fill you with awe this Christmas season. Full of festive entertainment by talented musicians and performers, this classic Colorado tradition is guaranteed to be unforgettable! Our award-winning Culinary Team has hand-crafted the evening’s four-course meal with sensational new flavors that pair perfectly with your one-of-a-kind experience!

Saturday morning (12/10) brings us to Manitou Springs for Breakfast with Santa! The Annual Breakfast with Santa is one event you do not want to miss. Each year, the Kiwanis Club of Manitou Springs invites families to enjoy breakfast with Santa. On the menu for breakfast will be all you can eat: Scrambled eggs, ham, pancakes, orange juice, hot chocolate, and coffee. Remember to bring your camera to take advantage of great pictures of the family with Jolly Old Kris Kringle!
Saturday evening should be a hilariously good time if you’re in town this weekend, as the Broadmoor World Arena will be presenting Jim Gaffigan! Jim Gaffigan is a Grammy nominated comedian, New York Times best-selling author, top touring performer, and multi-platinum-selling father of five. In 2015, Jim became one of only ten comedians in history to sell out the famed Madison Square Garden arena for the finale of his “Contagious” tour, he opened for Pope Francis in front of one million+ people in Philadelphia, and is now on tour again! Don’t miss your chance to see this rare comedic talent!

Sunday morning (12/11) will be a great time to get in some early Christmas shopping at the Citadel Mall, as they’ll be hosting a Christmas Bazaar and Fundraiser for MS Patient Justin Wilbert. They will have over 30 vendors. Direct sales and Crafters. We will also have a gift-wrapping table for you to get your gifts wrapped for just a donation. The funds raised will go towards Stem Cell Treatment for Justin, what better way to show a bit of that holiday spirit?
Sunday evening how about we keep the giving theme going, but a lot of fun for yourself as well! The Gold Room will be hosting a “Give!” benefit concert, featuring beloved bluegrass jam-band phenomenon, Cornmeal! Opening music provided by the Colorado College Bluegrass Ensemble. Proceeds benefit Rocky Mountain Highway, Rocky Mountain Field Institute, and Shift Thrift Store. Make your Indy Give! donation on-site to be entered to win gear from Mountain Equipment Recyclers Inc, tickets to MeadowGrass Music Festival 2017, and other great swag! Cornmeal is described as "A definite must for the bluegrass crowd, and big thumbs up for country and jam-band fans", and is heavily influenced by American roots and folk music. You’re in for a great time if good music for a good cause is up your alley!

Monday (12/12) brings us to Stargazers Theatre, where Josh Garrels will be putting on his “The Light Came Down” Christmas show. Josh Garrels has spent more than a decade crafting music that cuts clean through. Resting in the space between accessibility and honesty, Garrels’ songs wrestle with and celebrate the mystery of faith with authenticity and heart. Cultivating a genre-blending mix of folk and hip hop, Garrels’ music explores themes of compassion, hope, longing, and liberation. This is sure to be a must-see show if you’re in town this week!

Tuesday (12/13) provides a unique opportunity if you’re here in Colorado Springs and feeling adventurous, as this week’s Meetup dinner location will be at Rasta Pasta! Their menu is a fusion of Caribbean and Italian flavors that includes vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options. Per their website, they have "Creative Caribbean Pasta, fresh and funky salads, and 'ridiculously' good desserts." They also have a full bar featuring Jamaican beer and rums with local beer on tap. A delicious meal in good company is hard to pass up!

Wednesday (12/14) The hilarious duo Jay & Silent Bob are back! Film icons Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes made history and fans all over the world with the characters Jay & Silent Bob from the movies Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Clerks 2. Now you can see them live at The Hollywood Improv recording their comedy podcast Jay & Silent Bob Get Old. Ranked #1 on Itunes Comedy podcasts, this is a sometimes touching, always hilarious, look at what happens when two people grow up in Hollywood’s gaze. These limited engagements will be recorded as the stories evolve live in front of the audience, so every show is a completely unique experience!

Wrapping up our week with Thursday (12/15), we stop by Stargazers Theatre once again for the hugely popular Irish Christmas in America show, now in its 12th season, features top Irish music, song and dance in an engaging performance rich in history, humor and boundless energy. This family-friendly performance features evocatively-sung Irish ballads, lively instrumental tunes and thrilling Irish dancing, while evocative photographic images provide a backdrop to some of the rich historical traditions.
