The Changing of the Leaves is Here!

By Tony Fleming-Brum - October 23, 2017

Hello once again Colorado Springs, and welcome to this week’s edition of the Front Range Shuttle weekly events blog! How about the trees here in town? We’re smack dab in the middle of the changing of the seasons, and the changing of the leaves on the trees is in full effect! You won’t regret it if you take just one day this week to go for a quiet walk and take in the beauty of the Fall season! Weather this week is looking relatively calm so far, with highs in the 60s and all the way up to 75 on Wednesday, only to drop down to 50 with clouds and rain (and possibly snow!) on Thursday. Thursday is the only day with rain/snow in the forecast so far, though, so let’s get out and explore a bit!

Kicking off our week with Tuesday (10/24), we’ll be heading over to the Pikes Peak Center for the 40th anniversary celebration of the Rocky Horror Picture Show Film! For the past four decades, fans have been giving themselves over to absolute pleasure, dressing up as their favorite "Rocky Horror" character, and shouting lines and singing along as they follow the film and emulate the characters. The Pikes Peak Center is encouraging fans to come in costume as their character of choice and be a part of the audience as they dance the Time Warp and sing their loudest "Hot Patootie" during the film. One person will go home with the glory as the winner of the costume contest personally selected by Bostwick!

And heading into Wednesday (10/25), we’ll be on our way up to the Outlets at Castlerock for their Wicked Wednesday Halloween Party! A few days before All Hallows’ Eve, Outlets at Castle Rock is inviting families to take their Halloween costumes out for a test run at the Wicked Wednesday Halloween Party! This kid-friendly evening will include face painting, a holiday magic show by Keir Royale, a costume contest, all-center trick-or-treating and more. Costume contest participation is open to ages 12 and under, all contestants must be present at 5:30 to compete. Costumes will be judged in three categories – funniest, scariest and most creative – and winners will receive a special prize from the center. Trick-or-Treating will take place throughout the property from 4:40PM-6:30PM and spooky signage will direct candy-hunters into participating stores!

Continuing with our pre-Halloween week festivities on Thursday (10/26), we’ll be heading over to the Chapel Hills Mall for the 2017 Colorado Fear Fest, presented by The Haunted Mines! Through the years, the Haunted Mines has unearthed fear to those brave enough to face it. Rumor has it that miners have struck something other than coal down in the earth once again, and it has unleashed something dark...something evil. Slowly spreading into the town havoc, change, and illness; no one is safe. As you check into our "fest of fear", be prepared - for the only way out is through the void in which the terror came!

And kicking off our weekend with Friday (10/27), we’ve got a very special performance at the Pikes Peak Center: The Colorado Springs Philharmonic Presents: Mr. Adventure: The Music of John Williams! A thrilling tour of action-packed film music from John Williams. Whether it’s barn-storming Indiana Jones, magical Harry Potter, or that Skywalker fellow, it takes musical genius to bring the adventure to life. It’s all here in one concert, celebrating the greatest film composer of all time!

Getting right back on the Halloween train on Saturday (10/28), we’ll be heading up to Manitou Springs for the Emma Crawford Coffin Races! The parade starts at 12:00 pm followed by 70 teams racing coffins down Manitou Avenue for the ultimate victory. Each team consists of one Emma and four runners dressed in costume. The fastest times earn trophies as well as a chance to win Best Emma, Best Entourage, and Best Coffin. Given the volume of expected Coffin Race attendees, the scale of the event and the limited parking in Manitou Springs, Coffin Race organizers have devised a shuttle plan to maximize ease of access while limiting impact in town. Spectator parking will be available at: CORONADO HIGH SCHOOL, 1590 W Fillmore St, Colorado Springs, CO 80904 and ROCK LEDGE RANCH, 3105 Gateway Rd, Colorado Springs, CO 80904 Shuttles will run every 15 minutes starting at 9 am from both lots.

And wrapping up our week with Sunday (10/29), we’ll be stopping by the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo once again for their Boo at the Zoo! Cheyenne Mountain Zoo will come alive with spirit of Halloween when thousands of little superheroes, princesses and pirates attend Boo at the Zoo this October. Boo at the Zoo is a fun way for families to trick or treat and enjoy Halloween festivities in a safe and unique environment, and all their candy is made with sustainable palm oil to help protect wild orangutans! Put on your costume and bring your trick-or-treat bag and flashlight to the wildest Halloween event in town. It’ll be a frightfully good time!

And as always, don't forget about Front Range Shuttle! From cozy SUV's to 25 passenger buses, we have all your airport transportation needs covered!

Halloween is Coming!

By Tony Fleming-Brum - October 17, 2017

Good morning Colorado Springs, and welcome once again to this week’s edition of the Front Range Shuttle weekly events blog! It seems as though our one day of snow last week was a fluke, as the rest of the week we’ve had nothing but clear skies, and this coming week is looking to continue the trend! We’ll be seeing sunshine and highs in the mid-70s through Friday, a slight chance of rain on Saturday afternoon, and then right back to clear skies through next Monday! With the Fall leaves changing colors, this is the perfect time of year to get out and explore our beautiful state!

Kicking off our week with Tuesday (10/17), we’ll be heading over to the Black Forest area of Colorado Springs for the Colorado Pumpkin Patch! Take pictures of your child petting a llama or alpaca. Bring a smile to his or her face as they zip down the hay slide. Let them test their skills on the gourd launcher or duck races. It's all at the 10th annual Colorado Pumpkin Patch at their new location at 17405 Walden Way. Learn more, see photos & videos, and take advantage of group rates and bulk pumpkin orders at their website!

Rolling right along into Wednesday (10/18), we’ll be taking a quick trip up to Old Colorado City to check out the Michael Garman Museum and Gallery’s Spooky Magic Town! Michael Garman's 3,000 square foot cityscape gets a spooky makeover for Halloween! Normally, Magic Town is a perfectly normal place to visit -- Michael Garman's characters just go about their days. But, in October, that all changes. With spiderwebs hanging from streetlamps, zombies on the loose, and creepy new characters, this is an experience you won't want to miss: a miniature haunted town. Come enjoy a special scavenger hunt for those who are brave enough to peer down the zombie-filled alleyways featuring new special holographic appearances by some of Colorado Springs best actors, the Garman family, and Michael Garman himself!

As for this Thursday (10/19), we’ve got a special spooky treat in store for you at the Springs Ensemble Theatre: Afterlife, a ghost story by Steve Yockey! Steve Yockey, creator of Wolves, The Fisherman’s Wife, and Octopus, brings his fresh, magical style to this literal ghost story. afterlife: a ghost story follows Connor and Danielle, a couple forced to confront an unbearable loss while preparing their beachfront home for a massive storm. When the storm finally breaks over them, they must face a new world haunted by unsent letters, unexpected snow, unfinished sandcastles, and unrelenting messengers who have motives of their own. You won’t want to miss this show!

Heading into our weekend on Friday (10/20) we’ll have another Halloween treat for the family if you’re here in town: Boo at the Zoo! Cheyenne Mountain Zoo will come alive with spirit of Halloween when thousands of little superheroes, princesses and pirates attend Boo at the Zoo this October. Boo at the Zoo is a fun way for families to trick or treat and enjoy Halloween festivities in a safe and unique environment, and all our candy is made with sustainable palm oil to help protect wild orangutans! Put on your costume and bring your trick-or-treat bag and flashlight to the wildest Halloween event in town. It’ll be a frightfully good time!

This Saturday (10/21) we’ll be taking a quick break from the Halloween festivities at the Pikes Peak Center to enjoy the Colorado Springs Philharmonic presenting Tchaikovsky 5! Throughout his creative career, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's inspiration went through extreme cycles, tied to his frequent bouts of deep depression and self-doubt. In mid-May 1888 he wrote to his brother Modest that he was convinced that he had written himself out and that he now felt neither the impulse nor the inclination to compose. By the end of the month, however, he set about "...getting a symphony out of my dulled brain, with difficulty." Inspiration must have started to flow, for by the end of August, the massive Fifth Symphony was finished. This will definitely be a show worth checking out!

And wrapping our week up with Sunday (10/22), we’ll get right back to the spooky fun at the HellScream Haunted House and Sinister Haunted Houses! Visit if you dare the legendary HellScream Haunted House! HellScream is Colorado's #1 rated haunted attraction by Mile High Haunts, and Spooky Colorado. 3 Floors, and more of sheer terror, with Hollywood quality, insanely talented actors, cutting edge scares, and technology! Now, HellScream Haunts presents Colorado's Newest & Most Insane Haunted Attraction, Sinister Haunted House! 20,000+ square feet of mind numbing terror, AMAZING actors, special effects, animatronics, and more that you will ONLY see at Sinister Haunted House!

And as always, don't forget about Front Range Shuttle! From cozy SUV's to 25 passenger buses, we have all your airport transportation needs covered!

Our First Snow!

By Tony Fleming-Brum - October 10, 2017

Good morning Colorado Springs, and welcome back to this week’s edition of the Front Range Shuttle weekly events blog! We had our first snow yesterday! I hope everyone got a chance to see the first of many snowfalls to come this year. As for this week, we should be seeing mostly clear skies, although the temperatures will continue to dip lower in the evenings, with lows forecast in the 30s and 40s all the way through next week. Bundle up if you’re gonna be wandering around, but we’ll still have mostly clear skies!

Kicking off our week with Tuesday (10/10), we’ll be heading over to the Colorado Springs Children’s Museum! You are invited to the FALL open house and their GRAND OPENING at their new, larger ground floor museum and education center OCTOBER 10, 2017 from 3:30pm - 7:00pm. Refreshments and food are provided and an opportunity for you to view the Nature, Science, Multicultural Learning Center and the new, growing Colorado Springs Children's Museum. We hope to see you there!

As for this Wednesday (10/11), you’ll have a very special opportunity to take in a unique show if you’re here in town; Peak FreQuency Presents: Shakuhachi and Ichigenkin! With roots in the principles of Zen Buddhism and in spiritual practice, these traditional Japanese instruments share an underlying aesthetic concept: the discovery of the world that lies within one note, one sound. The program includes both traditional works and new compositions such as Elizabeth Brown's 秋廻り来て "Autumn Comes Round Again", with poetry written by survivors of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. You won’t want to miss this rare opportunity!

Rolling right along into Thursday (10/12), we’ll be heading up to the Pikes Peak Center for their presentation of Kris Kristofferson Live in Concert! Heralded as an artist’s artist, the three-time GRAMMY winner has recorded 30 albums, including three with pals Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings as part of the Highwaymen. Kristofferson has spent three decades performing concerts all over the world, in most recent years in a solo acoustic setting, which puts the focus on the songs. “There’s an honesty in the sparseness. It feels like direct communication to the listener,” he says. “I still have more fun when I’m with the band, but being alone is freer, somehow. It’s like being an old blues guy, just completely stripped away.” You won’t want to miss this one if you’re here in town!

And starting off our weekend with Friday evening (10/13, it’s Friday the 13th!), we’ll be stopping by the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center for their presentation of Bunnicula! A dancing cat, a howling dog, and a vampire bunny. The perfect pet combination for any family. It’s a dark and stormy night and Chester (the family cat) and Harold (the family dog) sit waiting for their owners to return home from the movies. Chester and Harold are more than just pets, they’re good friends too. When the Monroes finally get home, they come bearing a surprise: they’ve found a bunny in the movie theater. But this is no ordinary rabbit … this is the extraordinary Bunnicula. When the family’s produce starts losing its juice, Chester thinks he knows what’s causing the fantastic phenomenon. Bunnicula is a vampire! Or maybe Chester’s imagination is getting the better of him. Singing and dancing their way through this hilarious mystery, the furry friends find room in their hearts, and in their home, for one very unique bunny. You’ll definitely want to check this Halloween classic out!

This Saturday (10/14) we’ll have a lot going on around town, but the highlight will be back at the Pikes Peak Center once again, where they’ll be presenting Lyfe Jennings live! Having lost his father at a young age, Jennings' childhood was marred by hardship, receiving a ten-year prison sentence for arson at the young age of 14. His time spent in jail helped to change his life around, developing a deep passion for music, finding solace in the honest and emotive sound of Erykah Badu, which would be reflected in Jennings' own musical style. Being in jail led to Jennings to develop a very introspective and deeply conscious sound, reflecting upon the hardship he endured and the lessons learned. Upon his release in 2002, he recorded a four-song demo and began to perform live, appearing at the famous Apollo nightclub.

And wrapping up our week with Sunday (10/15), we’ll be making a short trip up to the Black Forest area of Colorado Springs for the Colorado Pumpkin Patch! This Week in Colorado Springs (10/3 - 10/8)

Happy Art Month!

By Tony Fleming-Brum- October 2, 2017

Good Morning Colorado Springs, and welcome once again to this week’s edition of the Front Range Shuttle weekly events blog! Weather is continuing to cool down, though we’re still in for a few days of sunshine scattered throughout the rainy afternoons. While most of us immediately relate October to Halloween, the month of October is celebrated as Arts Month here in the Pikes Peak region, so we’ll be focusing mainly on art-related events for this week. As we get closer to Halloween, though, you can count on our events growing creepier by the day!

Kicking off our week with Tuesday (10/3), we’ll be heading over to the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center for their showing of William “Buck” Walsky’s Beach Front art exhibit. William “Buck” Walsky, an Anchorage, Alaska-based, Colorado Springs-native artist, originally designed the immersive outdoor installation Beach Front for the notorious annual Burning Man festival, a multi-day extravaganza of music and art held in the heart of the Nevada desert. Utilizing found bicycle wheels, structural steel, and LED lights, Walsky’s massive installation responds to movements of the air, and gives the viewer a sensation of being in an underwater wonderland populated by electric jellyfish. By transferring the horizontal movement of wind to the perpendicular plane of the light canopy the wind becomes visible in a unique way and the fluid properties of the wind are illustrated. You’ll definitely want to stop by and check out this very unique showing!

Moving right along to Wednesday (10/4), we’ll be continuing our art-themed events at the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center, where they’ll be showing Frances Dodd’s collection entitled Compelling Color! Fran Dodd considers color to be her passion. These colors seen in nature will be enhanced or invented entirely! Fran looks for small fragments of beauty in the landscape - those moments that take the breath away in awe and wonder. Interpreting the landscape from her own viewpoint, she hopes to engage the viewer to stop and experience a little of the excitement and joy felt while painting.

As for Thursday (10/5), we’ll have a great chance to take in some musical “artwork” at Classically Alive here in Colorado Springs, where they’ll be hosting Internationally renowned Concert Pianist Ioana Ilie! Born in Sibiu, Romania, Ioana received her first piano lessons from Elena Drughe, at the age of four. Four years later, at the age of eight, she won her first piano competition. In 2002, she studied under Prof. Enikö Orth. Ioana soon became recognized as a winner of national and international competitions. Winning the Constantin Silvestri Scholarship Competition in 2005, she earned the opportunity to spend a year in England, where she worked with Moira Gray at the Pocklington College York. Ioana has performed in Romania, Bulgaria, Germany, Holland, Spain, England, Switzerland, the United States, and Japan. This is a rare chance to see one of the world’s truly talented artists, you won’t want to miss it!

Heading into our weekend on Friday (10/6), we’ll be heading out to Old Colorado City for the First Friday ArtWalk! Featuring local and internationally-known professional artists, the ArtWalk is a great way to get out and explore a bit of the diverse artwork that Colorado Springs has to offer. Pick from hundreds of original art offerings in more than a dozen art galleries. Enjoy a festive evening with Colorado Springs’ largest concentration of galleries along West Colorado Avenue, between 23rd and 27th Streets. The ArtWalk is a free, family friendly event, so bring the kids and have some fun!

This Saturday (10/7) we recommend heading down to Pueblo, Colorado (a quick 30min drive from Colorado Springs), as the Pubelo Memorial Hall will be hosting yet another form of verbal “artwork”, stand-up comedy with Carlos Mencia! Mencia began his career doing stand-up on amateur night at the comedy club, Laugh Factory. He later showcased at The Comedy Store and became a regular, performing nightly. After he found success on the L.A comedy circuit, Mencia was named "International Comedy Grand Champion" from Buscando Estrellas (the Latino version of Star Search). This led to appearances on In Living Color, The Arsenio Hall Show, Moesha and An Evening at the Improv. In 1994, he hosted the HBO comedy series Loco Slam and in 1998 he hosted Funny is Funny! on Galavision. Mencia released a comedy album in 2000 called Take a Joke, America that showcased his brand of humor. If you’re looking for a laugh this weekend, this is where you’ll want to be!

And wrapping up our “art week” with Sunday (10/8), we’ll be heading back over to the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center for their presentation of Ken Ludwig’s Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery! Get your deerstalker cap on – the play’s afoot! Comedic genius and Tony Award-winner Ken Ludwig (Lend Me a Tenor, Moon Over Buffalo), transforms Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic The Hound of the Baskervilles into a murderously funny adventure. Sherlock Holmes is on the case. The male heirs of the Baskerville line are being dispatched one by one. To find their ingenious killer, Holmes and Watson must brave the desolate moors before a family curse dooms its newest heir. Watch as our intrepid investigators try to escape a dizzying web of clues, silly accents, disguises and deceit as five actors deftly portray more than 40 characters. Does a wild hellhound prowl the moors of Devonshire? Can our heroes discover the truth in time? Join the fun and see how far from elementary the truth can be!

I hope you’ve gotten your fill of sunshine, as we’re now officially in Autumn! We’ll be starting to see some colder weather rolling over the mountains this week, along with scattered showers and thunderstorms all the way through next Monday, so be sure to pack some jackets if you’re in town for a visit!

Kicking off our week with Tuesday (9/26), we’ll be heading over to Sunshine Studios Live here in town for 94.3 Kilo’s presentation of alternative rock band Trapt, accompanied by Colorado Springs natives Lavinia Unknown! As for this Wednesday (9/27), we’ll be stopping by the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center for an exhibit that this Brazilian blogger is very excited about: Raizes/Roots: Transformations in Contemporary Brazilian Art! Raizes showcases four dynamic contemporary artists Ana Carolina Fernandes, Annie Ganzala, Elisa Riemer, and Henrique Oliveira. Four Brazilian artists complicate the connections between earth, spirit, body, and the impacts of colonialism and globalization in contemporary Brazilian society. It’ll be an excellent chance to take in some very eye-opening artwork representative of the current state of the country of Brazil.

Moving right along to Thursday (9/28), the good folks at the Millibo Art Theatre will be hosting a Season “Sneak a Peek” Party! Join them for their original happy hour on Thursday, September 28th from 6:30-8:00 for a sneak peek of their upcoming year. They’ll share all the juicy details of the work they’re putting together for their Premieres and Kids First season, samples of new whiskey and wine they’re offering this season as well as their super special one night only season subscription deals! The best part: It’s free!

This Friday (9/29) we’ve got a very special event coming to town: The Colorado Military Taptoo! Each year performers from different countries join with active duty military bands, first responder pipe bands, and civilian performance groups at the Colorado Military Taptoo. Opening with the sound of trumpets and the massed pipes and drums, the show takes you on a journey with the unique sights and sounds in the most beautiful setting: The Glen Eyrie! The show is the perfect setting for friends and family to come together with hundreds of spectators and experience the music and entertainment of the Taptoo.

Saturday (9/30) we’ll have another chance to get in to the Glen Eyrie to see the Colorado Military Taptoo, but if you already got your fill on Friday, we’ll also have another great show in town to check out: The Fall Rock Fest at Stargazers Theatre! Don’t miss Fall Rock Fest in Colorado Springs with three local bands, The Martini Shot, Wrestle With Jimmy, and Plain As Day! The Martini Shot is a seven-piece, horn-powered, Pop-Rock cover and original band based out of Southern Colorado. The Martini Shot has released four original projects with major influences of Barenaked Ladies, Reel Big Fish, 311, and many others. You’ll be in for a treat if you’re able to make it out to this FREE event!

Wrapping up our week with Sunday (10/1), we’ll be taking a quick trip up to Old Colorado City to check out the Michael Garman Museum and Gallery’s Spooky Magic Town!
