This Week in Colorado Springs (11/21 - 11/26)

Happy Thanksgiving!

By Tony Fleming-Brum - November 21, 2017

Good morning Colorado Springs, and welcome to this week’s edition of the Front Range Shuttle weekly events blog! It’s Thanksgiving week, and weather is looking to be quiet and very mild, with no chance for rain or snow all week! Thanksgiving day we’re looking at temperatures in the upper 60s and 70s, so we’ll have a great chance to enjoy some sun for the holiday!

Starting off our week with Tuesday (11/21), we’ll be heading over to the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum for their Fall Family Fun Days! If you’re looking for a fun family outing during Thanksgiving break, join the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum for their Fall Family Fun Days! Explore their brand new, 100% interactive children’s exhibit, “Beads, Blankets & Buffalo: Trading at Bent’s Fort.” Make seasonal crafts. Hop on a family-friendly guided tour offered at noon and 2pm, and enjoy a holiday movie and popcorn throughout the day!

As for this Wednesday (11/22), we’ll be stopping by the Stargazers Theatre for their Hungry Farmer Bands’ Annual Thanksgiving Reunion! Musicians never stop playing - they just change venues. If you were in a local band in the 1970s and '80s the place to play was The Hungry Farmer, a popular restaurant on Garden of the Gods Road known for its generous servings, country atmosphere and live music. In 1979 the manager decided to have a big Thanksgiving Day meal on Thanksgiving Eve for all the musicians who didn't have anywhere to go or any money to spend on the holiday. Those same musicians requested a post-meal jam session since they never got to play together, and a holiday tradition was born! The 38th Annual Hungry Farmer Bands’ Thanksgiving Reunion includes about 10 musicians from the Pikes Peak region and as far away as Iowa who get together to jam. The one prerequisite? Musicians must have played at The Hungry Farmer. Friends and family gather together each year to watch the former members of long ago bands, including Fall River Road, Buffalo Dreams, Radford Lewis Band, Range Rockets and Phantom Hooters.  Admission is 2 non-perishable food items or a small cash donation for Care & Share.

On Thanksgiving Day (11/23), most of us will be spending the holiday with family, but if you’re travelling for the holiday and looking for a nice Thanksgiving meal while you’re in town you may want to stop by The Antlers hotel for their Thanksgiving Brunch! The Thanksgiving Brunch menu at the Antlers Hotel will satisfy every appetite. Enjoy tantalizing food and add bottomless Mimosas or Champagne for only $10. Children under the age of 5 eat free with an adult. For more information, call 719.955.5600.

And breaking tradition on Black Friday (11/24), we will not be celebrating Black Friday, but a more Colorado-esque holiday: Fresh Air Friday at the Cheyenne Mountain State Park (Free Entry)! Spend a day of thanks outside at Cheyenne Mountain State Park, where we’ll be hosting a few activities for you to get to know your park! Here at CMSP there is plenty to keep your mind off those holiday sales. Tucked between Colorado Springs and Rockies, CMSP is abundant in native wildlife, hiking, biking & equestrian trails, year-round camping options and year-long programs to keep you busy! Join us - outside! – for this annual initiative to give every Coloradan an opportunity to get out and appreciate and have an all-around good time in the great wilderness found right outside our doors!

For those of you wanting to take advantage of the Black Friday Sales, we’ll be heading up to the Promenade Shops at Briargate this Saturday (11/25) for Parad-Ice on the Promenade! Black Friday weekend at the Promenade Shops at Briargate will feature an all new event to enhance the shopping experience. It is called “Parad-Ice on the Promenade” and will feature CO ice sculptor, Jess Parrish, of Food Network and Travel Channel fame, carving 5 holiday-themed sculptures at various locations at the center over the weekend. They will be illuminated at night to add to the festive holiday atmosphere. Customers are invited to vote for their favorite via Facebook or on-site and the sculpture that earns the most votes will have that dollar amount donated to The Empty Stocking Fund. Victorian carolers will stroll the center and customers can enjoy a hot beverage, a sweet treat and a commemorative gift during designated times.

And wrapping up our Thanksgiving weekend with Sunday (11/26), we’ll be heading over to the Pikes Peak Center for the Colorado Springs Philharmonic Presents: The Nutcracker! This enchanting favorite returns Thanksgiving weekend when a Christmas Eve gift of a toy nutcracker from her godfather transports Clara on a magical journey to a world of fantasy and fun. With a newly added Friday matinee, create memories to last a lifetime with the Philharmonic and the Oklahoma City Ballet for Tchaikovsky’s musical masterpiece, The Nutcracker!

And as always, don't forget about Front Range Shuttle! From cozy SUV's to 25 passenger buses, we have all your airport transportation needs covered!

This Week in Colorado Springs (11/14 - 11/19)

Happy Native American Heritage Month!

By Tony Fleming-Brum - November 14, 2017

Good morning Colorado Springs, and welcome once again to this week’s edition of the Front Range Shuttle weekly events blog! It would appear as though the “last week” of summer-esque weather still hasn’t arrived for us here in the high desert! Last week we saw temperatures dip a bit on Tuesday and Wednesday, but they rose right back up right after the snow shower passed us by, and we should continue to see relatively warm weather all the way through next week!

Kicking off our events with Tuesday (11/14), we’ll be heading up to the Michael Garman Museum & Gallery for Christmas in Magic Town! The Michael Garman Museum & Gallery is pleased to announce that it’s time for Christmas in Magic Town! ‘Tis the season to celebrate in Michael Garman’s 3,000 square foot cityscape, decorated specially for Christmas. Located in the historic district of Old Colorado City, Magic Town is a 1/6th scale miniaturized urban neighborhood, complete with dozens of handcrafted buildings, alleyways, and sidewalk scenes that transform before your very eyes. Peer down alleyways and peek into windows to see shifting scenes. Come see Michael Garman’s beloved characters beside magical holiday holograms featuring Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, Christmas carolers, and some new special characters with holiday stories to tell!

And heading into Wednesday (11/15), we’ll be stopping by the Cottonwood Center for the Arts to check out their new juried exhibit: Zero Point! Zero Point tasked artists with the challenge of whittling down the element of color in their works. Monochrome art is meant to create a “zero point” — a relief from the artistic burdens of color and color theory. The result of simplifying the variety of color is a deeper appreciation for the interaction between tone, shade, contrast and subject matter.

As for this Thursday (11/16), we’ll be heading over to Front Range BBQ for their 5th Annual Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament! Yes, you read that correctly, it is a Rock, Paper, Scissors tournament!  It works like this: -Sign up ONLINE to represent a team (New Belgium or Oskar Blues). $10 entry fee/person benefiting UpaDowna -Show up and show off your mad, hand ninja skillz! All proceeds will benefit UpaDowna. UpaDowna is a nonprofit based locally in Colorado Springs but serves folks globally as a means to bring together people that have a need to cure “Nature Deficit Disorder”. By encouraging you to get outdoors to stop, listen, breathe deep, and become more aware of what it means to be alive. By reaching out through our community programs both educational and fun filled, we will show you the path into the hills by providing instructional classes as well as hands on experiences covering backpacking, hiking, camping, cycling, climbing, bouldering, wilderness survival, skiing, snowboarding, stand up paddle-boarding and much, much more!

And kicking off our weekend with Friday (11/17), we’ll be heading to the Pikes Peak Center for their presentation of Jeanne Robertson! An overnight success nearly half a century in the making, Jeanne Robertson keeps audiences rolling on the floor with laughter. At 73 years young, this former Miss North Carolina stands tall at six-foot-two and has a personality, heart and sense of humor that soar just as high. For years, her witty speeches were mostly limited to conventions and meetings, but with the dawn of the digital age, the world became exposed to Robertson's infectious humor when her YouTube videos suddenly went viral. Now with eight nationally released DVDs/CDs, three books, hundreds of hours on SiriusXM satellite radio and over 39 million YouTube views, the demand for Robertson's family-friendly and engaging brand of comedy has grown exponentially. Robertson is the embodiment of the classic, sophisticated Southern woman who even in her seventh decade shows no signs of slowing down. You won’t want to miss this one!

This Saturday (11/18), we’ll be making a stop at The Broadmoor Seven Falls, where they’ll be kicking off their Winter Lights at Seven Falls event! In 1947, a tradition began at Seven Falls to promote the canyon at night when alternating colored and white lights illuminated the waters, much to the delight of locals and visitors worldwide. On Saturday, November 18, the much-loved, multi-colored display returns for the holiday season as Seven Falls celebrates the third annual Winter Lights event. More than 100,000 individual lights will line the path leading to the Falls, and this year, colored lights will also adorn the cliff faces of the Pillars of Hercules, making for not only a festive atmosphere, but a photographer’s dream locale for holiday family photos!

And wrapping up our week with Sunday (11/19), we’ll be heading over to the Broadmoor World Arena for a Colorado Springs holiday tradition: The Trans-Siberian Orchestra! Over the past 20-plus years, Trans-Siberian Orchestra (“TSO”) has become a critically-acclaimed, multi-platinum, musical powerhouse, and its annual winter stop in Colorado Springs a beloved, multi-generational holiday tradition. 2017’s tour, a completely updated presentation of TSO’s unforgettable “The Ghosts of Christmas Eve,” will visit The Broadmoor World Arena on Sunday, November 19 with shows at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.  Based on TSO’s multi-platinum DVD and long running PBS fundraiser, “The Ghosts of Christmas Eve,” the rock opera features such enduring fan-favorites as "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24," "O’ Come All Ye Faithful," "Good King Joy," "Christmas Canon," "Music Box Blues," "Promises To Keep," and "This Christmas Day." You won’t want to miss this one!
