Just One Week Until Christmas!

By Tony Fleming-Brum - December 19, 2017

Good morning Colorado Springs, and welcome once again to this week’s edition of the Front Range Shuttle weekly events blog! We’re looking at clear skies and temperatures in the 50s to 60s on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, but a quick drop down to the 30s and a good chance of snow on Thursday! Friday we’ll have a bit of a break, and then a full day of snow is in the forecast for Saturday, with a high of only 18 degrees! We’re back to the old Colorado roller coaster of weather, but at least we’re seeing some moisture!

Kicking off our week of events with Tuesday (12/19), we’ll be making our way up to the North end of Colorado Springs for the Illumination Light Show! Walk through their Christmas light park and enjoy the sights and sounds of Christmas. They have 1/4 of a million lights while some lights are set to music. Christmas favorites play on a round while you enjoy the lights. Before or after the walk enjoy smores, hot chocolate, apple cider and more while you sit with friends or family. After you warm up, head out for a second lap if you like! With snow fast approaching, you’ll definitely want to take this chance to check out the lights before it’s too cold for the kids!

As for this Wednesday (12/20), we’ll be stopping by the Pikes Peak Center for their presentation of A Colorado Nutcracker with the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony and the Colorado Springs Children’s Chorale! Enjoy this new, family-friendly version of "The Nutcracker" bringing Colorado Springs' unique history to life in the Glen Eyrie home of General William J. Palmer, during a Christmas Eve celebration amongst the city's illustrious founding fathers. Young Clara, an orphan visitor, is blessed to receive a magical Nutcracker doll from Nikola Tesla, inventor extraordinaire and special guest at the party. As a winter blizzard continues to gain force, all guests are invited to stay the night - and Clara dreams of other-worldly mysteries, enchantment and beauty. Surely the giant mice and soldiers are not real? But there in the midst of the battle is her brave Nutcracker - leaping and defending her against the giant Rat King! Clara is transported through a crystalline Winter Wonderland into the fantasy Land of Sweets! Welcomed by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her court of sweet delicacies, fanciful characters from across the world entertain and honor Clara for rescuing their beloved Nutcracker Prince. Was it just a dream? She may never know-and it doesn’t really matter-it’s the best Christmas ever!

And rolling right along into Thursday (12/21, the Winter Solstice!), we’ll be heading up to Old Colorado City to the Michael Garman Museum for Christmas in Magic Town! The Michael Garman Museum & Gallery is pleased to announce that it’s time for Christmas in Magic Town! Located in the historic district of Old Colorado City, Magic Town is a 1/6th scale miniaturized urban neighborhood, complete with dozens of handcrafted buildings, alleyways, and sidewalk scenes that transform before your very eyes. Peer down alleyways and peek into windows to see shifting scenes. Come see Michael Garman’s beloved characters beside magical holiday holograms featuring Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, Christmas carolers, and some new special characters with holiday stories to tell.

Kicking off our weekend with Friday (12/22), we’ll be making our way over to Colorado Vertical for their Helicopter Christmas Light Tours! Experience the magic of Christmas from the air! See a reindeer’s-eye view of millions of Christmas lights, the beautiful Colorado Springs night-scapes and so much more. Take a cozy, heated helicopter and enjoy this Colorado Vertical tradition from the comfort and safety of your own, private jet-helicopter ride!

As for this Saturday (12/23), we’ll be heading up to the Iron Springs Chateau in Manitou Springs for their presentation of “Have a Very Merryville Christmas”! “Have a Very Merryville Christmas..or..Chris and Jingle to the Rescue!” is a Christmas melodrama that takes place in the mountains of Colorado in the 1890’s. Christopher Claus and his best friend Jingle are looking to start a toy factory, and have traveled to Merryville, CO. Merryville’s mayor, Mondo Crankypants, has raised taxes on the good people of his town, and decreed that no toys of decorations are to be allowed in Merryville. Miss Merry Mary Merryweather must appeal to Chris and Jingle when all the presents in town disappear! Can Chris and Jingle find the presents, save Christmas, and deliver the poor town of Merryville from it’s Great Depression? The melodrama is followed by a Christmas sing-along intermission and their fun-filled Holiday themed audeville style Olio with crazy costumes, songs, dances, and jokes!

And wrapping up our week with Sunday (12/24, Christmas Eve!), there will be lots of opportunities to see Santa here in Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs, but I’m guessing most of us will be cozied up at home with our families. Merry Christmas from Front Range Shuttle!

One of the breakout bands to not just embrace but help shift the tectonic plates of the music industry was Crazy Town. As one of the first hybrid brands, they brought a new ball into the game. Equal parts urban and suburban, Chevrolet and Bentley, they rolled onto the music scene with a slow build that erupted when a “Butterfly” entered the room.

Filled with festive entertainment by talented musicians and performers, this classic Colorado tradition is guaranteed to create unforgettable Christmas memories! Our award-winning Culinary Team has hand-crafted the evening’s lavish four-course meal with savory new flavors that pair perfectly with your sensational experience. Be sure to arrive on time for valet parking and hors d’oeuvres prior to the show!

By Tony Fleming-Brum - November 28, 2017

Good morning Colorado Springs, and welcome once again to this week’s edition of the Front Range Shuttle weekly events blog! Weather has been incredibly mild so far this winter, and doesn’t appear to be changing any time soon. This week we’re looking at mostly clear skies, with highs in the 50s and 60s all the way through to next week. With that in mind, let’s get on with our fun events this week!

Within a forest of animated trees and one highly conscientious sandman, there stands a cottage of enticing treats NOT to be touched. There lives a brave gingerbread boy who places himself at the center of a great woodland contest for the lives of two very hungry children. Whoever thought a Christmas cookie could be THIS good?

And wrapping up our week with Sunday (12/3), we’ll be stopping by a staple of Old Colorado City: Thunder and Buttons! In 1888 a rowdy, Colorado City resident named Prairie Dog O’Byrne (so named because of the prairie dog he had running in a wheel on the back of his rig) purchased two bull elk and hitched them to his carriage. The elk were named ‘Thunder’ and ‘Buttons’. In 1978, local historian Dave Hughes told this story to a local entrepreneur who purchased the building. The entrepreneur decided to name his new ‘saloon and eatery’ after the two elk. This Sunday we’ll be swinging by for their Football Sunday special, with all day happy hour, prizes, games, and lots of fun!
